A Dirty Dozen with PAUL WANDTKE from DEAD ORIGINAL – September 2019

| 26 September 2019 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Dead Original is a grunge infused trio from Chicago, IL featuring vocalist/guitarist Paul Wandtke (Bedlem, ex Trivium) drummer Rob Lerner and bassist Sean McCole. Dead Original is a blend of grunge, groove power, simple riffs, melodic hooks and some progressive elements via some tastefully placed odd meters.” We get singer/guitarist Paul to discuss new music, influences, and much more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

We’ve been getting comments and messages saying that we have the potential to bring grunge back. Our release is Oct 11th with our first two singles being “Fade to Light” and “Bored Again.”

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Me and my bro used to play Nirvana and Punk rock growing up. When I saw Kurt Cobain on the TV I was hooked and said I want to do that, while I was playing legos haha I was hooked.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

Nirvana was huge on me. After that I picked up the drums and got into Pantera, Mötley Crüe, Megadeth, and the rest is history.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Nirvana, Pantera, Tool, Led Zepplin, and The Doors.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains because I suck at guitar.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

We have deep connections with that 90’s Seattle sound but it sounds modern is what most people are saying.

7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

I feel free man. Esp on show days and in the studio.

8. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

We’ve only been a band for about two years so we’ve only hung out at shows so I’d say catering!? And we just play shows?

9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

Nikki Sixx man! He came to The Roxy, I was drumming for Trivium and he watched our whole set; it was insane. Then a festival 3 months later he invited me on his bus and we just talked about vocal warm ups and music, it was a blast man.

10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Honestly life is so commercialized. Esp the music scene, I tell my gf everyday that I wish we could get away and get paid to chill on a mountain and just day dream ya know? Screw it – be a monk.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

YES! I wish I was doing what I’m doing now with Dead Original. I don’t know why I thought being a work for hire drummer was a good idea. I shoulda followed my gut and pursued songwriting and singing way earlier. Live and learn.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Honestly I was to focus on now! Those records inspired me so leave them alone! IMO
