Again I find myself in the odd position of reviewing a disc recorded in a foreign language. Why would I possibly care about an Italian artist that won the 2012 Sanremo Music Festival? It all started when my better half suggested a trip to Italy and we started looking into things to do while there. Next thing you know, I have purchased two tickets and requested photo credentials to see Emma Marrone, who simply goes by Emma. Better get familiar with her music, so I order all three discs available.
When this, her latest release shows up I throw it in and can’t get enough of it. Next thing you know, I am listening to it on my iPod while running. There are cool arrangements that include orchestral sounds (“Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu”) and beautiful vocals abound. The disc kicks off right though with what appears to be a huge hit for Emma, “Non E’ L’ Inferno.” There are tons of videos on the web featuring this song. I suggest you check one out and decide for yourself.
The songs keep the strong feel of the opening tracks and I find myself liking more and more of the disc as it plays. Who am I kidding; I can’t take it out of the player. You won’t find a whole lot to bang your head to here, but I don’t think that is the intention. This disc rocks in a pop vein, but rocks nonetheless. The musicianship here is tight. The guitars shine in different spots, the keyboards are kept in check, and the vocals – both lead and background – are luscious and full.
If you have ever considered checking out music just to check out music, give this one a fair shot. If you don’t mind not getting the lyrics or even being able to pick them up the first few times through, again, give this one a spin.
