Matt Corby and his six-person ensemble performed at the Riverside Theatre in Perth, the third show in his “The Tragic Magic Tour” following his new album release in April of the same name. The group lit up the stage at the Riverside both literally and metaphorically, giving us a very uplifting and soulful concert.

Gretta Ray opened for Corby, also appearing as a member in his band. Ray had a great voice and performed a set of good acoustic angsty songs.

Corby entered the stage after Ray had finished her set and began by performing a beautiful electric guitar solo, veering on the Pink Floyd-esque. As they lead into their first song, “King Of Denial”, blue rays of light swept around their silhouettes, creating a beautiful atmosphere perfectly reflecting the set they were about to play, and they even managed to get the audience clapping together one song in.

Throughout the show several different light patterns lit up the stage during different songs varying in colour, movement and methodical flickering. Each member was abstractly placed on the stage at a different angle, working brilliantly with the light effects, having their own silhouettes stand out as they were draped in different colours.

Corby’s music was on another level being performed live: soulful and almost veering into a gospel vibe at times, and his voice has stunning range and clarity. It was impossible not to feel the music in your chest in the best way possible hearing it. His vocals were exceptional, especially during highlights of “Resolution”, “Miracle Love” and “No Ordinary Life”, not to mention featuring “Dracula” by Tame Impala towards the end of the show, a song he’d previously performed on Triple J’s Like A Version.

As the first song of Corby’s encore he did a duet with his 10 year old self singing Amazing Grace, having a recording played in the background of younger him, bringing the tone down as he looked on the edge of tears, an emotion many in the crowd echoed.

Finishing with his well known hit Brother, Corby’s show felt like a campsite concert, his vocals filled with raw emotions and love, best enjoyed with community, good friends or a loved one.
