British comedy stalwart has been visiting our shores for 25 years now, he says, but he’s still endlessly amused by our laconic Aussieness – he shares that he feels Australia is like a second home after so many visits – and he undoubtedly appears to be having a hoot during the final show of his latest tour.
The world certainly has seemed to have changed since his first visit, he concedes, even admitting that he almost had to cancel the tour following routing issues through the Middle East due to ongoing conflict. It’s unlikely fodder for comedy, but by geez he makes it hilarious.
Laughter, he insists, is the one thing which elevates us over the animal kingdom, and the former lawyer juggles his material masterfully as he bounces around a myriad of topics, playfully teases a few characters in the audience, tosses in some wry asides, leaving plenty of sore sides by the end of the non-stop hilarious show.
Highlights include bizarrely being admonished for using ‘cultural insensitive’ Nigerian accents when doing a bit about his Nigerian parents; discussing the psychology of laughter; and relentless crowd interaction.
It all adds up to a bit of a masterclass in how to deliver an engaging, partially spontaneous and ad libbed comedy set, without punching downwards at any moment, and the crowd loved him for it. Top notch.
