Sophie B. Hawkins on NBC’s “Community” & More
Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins returned to the spotlight in a big way when she was featured in a recent episode of NBC’s hit TV show “Community” (original air date April 4, 2013.) In the episode titled “Herstory of Dance” the sitcom’s characters throw competing college dances – pitting a “Sadie Hawkins” dance against a “Sophie B. Hawkins Dance.” Tensions arise until the real Sophie B. Hawkins surprises everyone by showing up to perform!
Playing herself on TV proved to be a lot of fun, and Hawkins enjoyed every moment of the experience. “The whole cast are truly funny and great actors,” says Hawkins. The episode “reminded me of ‘The Brady Bunch” when Marsha has to get Davy Jones (The Monkees) to her dance – and he comes – just like me!”
American singer, songwriter and musician Sophie B. Hawkins is best know for her hits “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover,” “Right Beside You,” and “As I Lay Me Down.” Her 1992 debut album “Tongues and Tails” earned her a Grammy nomination for “Best New Artist.”
No stranger to TV, Hawkins appeared in an episode of “Friends” – another NBC hit – when her single “As I Lay Me Down” was at the top of the music charts.
Hawkins is currently starring in the critically acclaimed musical Room 105: The Highs and Lows of Janis Joplin. Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Gigi Gaston, Room 105 is a thoughtful and entertaining tribute to legendary soul singer Janis Joplin. The show is a humorous, engaging, bittersweet and honest confessional. Hawkins as Joplin’s Ghost returned invites audiences into her creative world and turbulent life, telling a story that reveals the iconic singer’s thoughts on love, sex, fame and belonging.
Showcasing classic Joplin music and original songs by Sophie B. Hawkins, Room 105 brings the transformative counterculture of the 1960’s to life, with realistic imagery, and riveting dramatic elements of past to present day. “Hawkins echoes the fire of Joplin herself!” affirms Aspen Times.
In addition to Room 105, Hawkins is promoting her latest CD “The Crossing” and performing at select festivals across the country and pond.
