It’s always an amazing time seeing Gogol Bordello get onto the stage. Every time I have been fortunate to see them perform, which is the 4th time, it has always been an absolute party. Everyone is there for a good time, and never any issues from the very broad range of fanbase in the house. This show was no different from all of the other shows in the past. High energy and jubilant expressions mixed with a bit of whimsy and alcohol, the stage performance is never one to be missed. The last time I was able to catch a GB show was back in 2021, right after the start of the war in Ukraine, so the mood then was a bit more sombre and all proceeds had been donated to Ukraine on that tour. This time, everyone was more jovial and excited to be there and to have a solid time engaging with the nearly sold-out audience.
The first few tracks of their set were “Ignition,” “Never Wanna Be Young,” “Not a Crime,” “Immigrant Punk,” “Wonderlust King,” “My Companjera,” and “Fire on Ice Floe” before frontman Eugune Hutz had a moment to talk with the audience and mention the majority of the rest of the show would be off of their new album We Mean It, Man! which definitely set the overall mood for the rest of the evening. Even with the new songs that have only just been released, the audience was there for it. The entire room was dancing and hopping, and they already knew most of the words. Eugene even coyed at one point and laughed about that fact. Throughout the evening, there were numerous solos played by each member of the band as well as members of the opening act Puzzeled Panther, getting onto the stage to help perform. One key moment was a violin duel between Gogol member Sergey Ryabtsev and Nashville musician and producer Tracy Silverman. Upon finishing several selections from the new album, Gogol switched back to playing a few of the ultimate fan favorites to close out the evening with “Start Wearing Purple” and “Pala Tute.” After leaving the stage for a short while, they came back to perform a 3-song encore before ultimately finishing the night off with “Undestructable.” I left the evening fully rejuvenated and ready for the next time I can catch them perform live. This was by far the best way anyone could’ve imagined or wanted to spend a St. Patrick’s Day evening.
