First show of the year and I was pumped to see Nothing More in Charlotte, but little did I know how good this show was going to be. I missed the first opening act but made it in plenty of time to catch up-and-comers Archers take the stage and play their asses off for their allotted set time. The foursome commanded the stage and delivered a killer set that won the crowd over quickly and maintained their hold over the packed audience. Next up with Catch Your Breath and before their set was over, I was texting some of my concertgoing partners and telling them to check these guys out. The set was tight, their sound was over the top amazing, and you could tell these guys were having a blast playing song after song as the venue filled up with each passing moment before the headliners were to play. I keep looking back to this set as one of the best I have seen and heard from a band that was totally new to me walking into a venue.
Finally, the moment arrived when Nothing More would take the stage before a sold-out Fillmore Charlotte crowd. From the first notes of the intro, the audience lost their mind and there was no putting that energy back or the cap on the bottle. Once the band took their rightful places on stage and the music flowed, we were off and running on one of the highest energy shows I have seen in a long time. Pulling from their catalog, the band ripped through chart hits, fan favorites, even digging in and asking the audience to choose a song about 2/3 of the way through the setlist. With smiles and seemingly endless enthusiasm, the entire band brought everything they had and left it all on the stage pleasing every patron that walked in the door for a rock show. Personal favorites “Let ‘Em Burn” and “FREEFALL” were tossed into the mix of the evening giving me moments to relish as I listened intently as the four musicians careened through fourteen songs from their releases and even tossed in solo solos and a phenomenal drum musical piece that blew minds from the front of the venue to the back and from left to right. I could see the glimmer in a lot of air drummers’ eyes, much like an air guitarist goes crazy with riffs. The interaction with the audience was perfectly placed and timed, allowing everyone to catch their collective breaths – as if the band and crowd was one rock and roll animal. One of my favorite takeaways from Nothing More’s set was my newfound love for set closer “This Is The Time (Ballast)” that sent me into the dark and chilly January evening humming a rock and roll tune until I could queue it up over my car’s sound system. These guys are always great but catch them on their current run — they are firing on all cylinders.
