Was able to dial back the musical clock nearly 30 years and revisit some killer R&B from the mid 90’s when the Room 112 Tour rolled into Charlotte’s Ovens Auditorium. Making my way through the venue and getting myself set up near the stage, I made it just in time for opener Case to take the mic and get the night rolling after a DJ started warming up the crowd. With just a DJ to assist, Case rolled through some tracks from his catalog including “Happily Ever After” and “Missing You,” with the former being my personal favorite of his songs and the latter closing out his time on stage. A cool mid-set addition was a partial cover of “Tender Love,” taking me back decades. After he left, the venue house lights remained dark, and the warmup DJ continued whipping the crowd into a frenzy while we all prepared for the next set from Total. From the moment the duo hit the stage flanked by dancers, they were a spectacle to behold in their white dresses adorned by feathers. The music from the accompanying band and DJ Stormy was spot on and the perfect accompaniment for the vocals from Kima Dyson & Keisha Epps. For being a special guest on the tour, the group brought their A game and gave everything they had. The set was full of hits and fan favorites, which kept fans singing and dancing in their seats, in the aisles, and even in the lobby while getting a beverage. The two women controlled the stage, the flow of the show, and the overall vibe in the venue. The setlist was full of hits and killer moments that kept the show flowing and it was over before some of us wanted it to end. I heard some new to me music – with “Rain” being a highlight – as well as some familiar tracks I love from their self-titled debut release.
After their allotted stage time was used up, the stage stayed dark and some slight changes to the setup were made while the vibes from the Total performance swirled in the air with the anticipation of what was to come when 112 – Marvin “Slim” Scandrick and Michael “Mike” Keith – would assume their spots on stage. With the assistance of the same band and DY Stormy, the pair worked through their set, dialing up the R&B quotient as well as some hip-hop nostalgia for everyone in the house. While the songs all took on a different feel live, there was something extra special about “Peaches & Cream” and “Cupid,” the two songs from their catalog I am most familiar with. It was amazing to see how many people sang word for word from song to song as well as dancing in the aisles, forcing the venues ushers to allow the party to happen without telling people to stay in their seats. Slim and Mike’s voices were strong and carried the set overtop the music and beats thrown down by the band and Stormy. They had a guest in NC native Sunshine Anderson that joined them as well during their set. Having listened to the hits from tonight’s artists through the years, it was fun digging in and hearing not only the hits I enjoy but finding a handful of new ones to swirl into my playlists. The shows resume next week, so get out to a show and enjoy some hits, some nostalgia, and some kick ass R&B music from 112, Total, and Case.
