While I might attend a comedy show from time to time, it isn’t my norm and certainly not when it comes to photographing a show. Truth be told, Margaret Cho’s Choligarchy tour stop on a Friday night in Charlotte was my first behind a lens. Opener Danny Webb warmed up the packed crowd with a flamboyant set that includes lots of self-reflection and observances on Danny’s behalf and applying those to everyday life, especially when it comes to aging, family, and sexual orientation. He made us laugh with and at him while he poked fun at different facets of his life. After his time at the mic, it was time for the living legend Margaret Cho to share her thoughts with us. Without giving away jokes, observances, or the path of discussions and jokes, let me say this… no one in today’s political and global climate was safe from Cho’s line of fire (especially specific persons and poilitical parties – IYKYK). While there were multiple dry references, the comedy and sharing tonight was anything but dry. Some may say there is some shame in her game but take it from me – no one left there with less than a smile on their face or sharing their takeaways as they left the venue after the set. While she doesn’t shy from any subjects, it was refreshing to hear honest revelations about sex and sexual relationships, weight loss, and life in general. The tour stops are filling the calendar over the next three or so months and I can only imagine how daily life will influence her show from now until the end of the tour. Oh, and be sure to stay until the end when Margaret dusts off the variety show portion of the evening.
