No matter how adventurous and open-minded you are, the odds are pretty strong that your sex life is pretty vanilla compared to Till Lindemann’s. The Rammstein singer’s solo outings feature such kink-obsessed subject matter as bum fun with larger women (Fat), going pee pee on each other (Golden Showers) and the unfortunate side effect of making love without a condom (Praise Abort).
My German is rudimentary at best, but I’m going to assume that the roughly two thirds of the setlist which were sung in German during his wildly intense Perth show cover similar lyrical territory.
In the few moments we could tear our eyes from the OTT spectacle unfolding on stage, we noticed plenty of PVC and leather in the crowd, many of whom seemed far more familiar with Lindemann’s infamous reputation and industrial-tinged metal.
Melbournite openers Mélancolia earlier delivered a growling set of deathy nu-metal, the raw vocals and sheer attitude proving a great warm-up for the big man. Intense as they were, though, nothing was going to upstage Lindemann.
The band – male lead guitarist and drummer (albeit clad in a skirt and fake breasts and with a dental-style mouth opener inserted) and female guitarist, bass player and keyboardist (who doubled as an acrobatic contortionist) – began in militaristic uniforms while their leader prowled the stage, face painted half black, half gold, amidst an unrelenting visual barrage of lights, noise and sometimes graphic imagery on a large back screen.
It would all be very confronting to some, but there are no prudes in the audience tonight and they collectively lap up everything Lindemann & Co throw at them – which at one point includes old-style clown cream pies. It’s a cute and ironic touch given the intensity of everything else that’s going on and provides an amusing counterpoint to what might be described as the perversion inherent in his oeuvre.
To start the encore Lindemann creeps through the crowd in the maze-like Metro City, a go pro on his head, and as he returns to the stage someone in the crowd proffers up their prosthetic leg, which he then carries around for a while before sending a roadie to find a suitable marker pen so he can sign the artificial limb before returning it. Just as well, otherwise that person may have been hopping home.
There’s always something going on onstage – including a bizarre medical procedure involving removing toy fish from the drummer’s nether regions at one point in the encore – and it all adds up to pure theatre in the Nine Inch Nails/Marilyn Manson vein, and the imposing figure that is Lindemann, along with his showband, deliver an eye opening show which may rate as one of the strangest – yet most entertaining – we’ll see this year.
