Al Pacino’s memoir is a love letter to acting, presented in a poetic and dramatic style which is exactly as charismatic and riveting as any of his best performances.
Starting with some lesser-known territory – childhood on the mean streets of Brooklyn – he discusses his raging insecurity and shyness at the attention fame brought him.
At his best when delving into his motivations and approach to his craft, he’s a zealot for truth in acting performances, and it’s fascinating to read.
Even when he feels he failed in his own exacting standards, he openly discusses why, and where his perceived shortfall occurred.
He’s also very open about his problems with alcohol and drugs – whilst never discussing excess for its own sake or for titillation – and the problems that caused in his personal life and relationships.
Put simply, Sonny Boy is a delightful read from a master of their craft, whether you want to hear something behind the scenes of The Godfather or Scent of A Woman or Bobby Deerfield or many other great movies, or if you’re an aspiring actor looking for tips on how to apply what he does in your own approach to your craft.
