How often in your lifetime do you get to see and hear a two-time Hall Of Fame inductee perform hits from across their catalog? This past Monday night, that’s exactly what I did when Graham Nash brought his More Evenings of Songs & Stories to Charlotte. Armed with a catalog stacked full of hits and a million memories as well as a knack for storytelling, Nash and his more than capable band took the stage without the need for an opening band or warmup of any type. Starting the night off with the smash “Wasted on the Way,” Graham and band set a very high bar for the evening, but with the set he had planned for the packed theatre, the bar was going to be easily eclipsed. The opening tracks of the show found Nash holding down the stage from center stage and behind an acoustic guitar while his band anchored the songs and the performance perfectly. Nash dropped anecdotes before and after each track, but another interesting story that popped up was one of the many links between he and Joni Mitchell when he introduced “I Used to Be a King.” As the set rolled along, more stories decorated the evenings musical landscape, but quickly Graham made sure to give a hefty tip of the hat to each of the performers on stage with him introducing the players – Todd Caldwell on keyboards and vocals, Zach Djanikian on guitar, mandolin, drums, and vocals, and jack of all trades Adam Minkoff on bass, drums, guitar, and vocals (including a cool moment of playing bass while also keeping time on drums) – and letting them move about the stage as needed to play their various instruments. Several Nash solo songs were included in the second set of the evening after a brief intermission.
Peppering the evening with stories and songs from his time with the various incarnations of Crosby, Stills, & Nash or the other collaboration that saw the trio joined by Young, it is obvious when you strip back the years, the fights, and the drama, there was tons of respect and love between the performers. Nash praised each of them at various times throughout the evening, mentioning them during story time for different songs he played during his set. One of the first such moments came when Graham played the Crosby / Nash penned medley of “Critical Mass” / “Wind On The Water” or when he closed out the first set with the Stills classic “Love The One You’re With.” The second set was CSN / CSNY heavy with hits and fan favorites like “Ohio,” Cathedral,” “Our House,” and “Teach Your Children” being focal points both from a storyteller point of view, but sonically as we were treated to amazing renditions of the songs. While we will never again experience the magic of CSN / CSNY live, the evening with Graham Nash and his Songs and Stories is an amazing night of classics and memories that stands as a fitting replacement. April 1st in Charlotte with Graham Nash was anything but an April Fool’s joke… with the only joke being on those that didn’t make it out for the show.
