An evening of the blues and some great guitar work was on the agenda when a slight drizzle arrived in Cornelius on a Thursday evening… but it did little to dampen the mood inside Cain Center.  With no opener to work the crowd up, Ana Popovic and her band hit the stage and proceeded to deliver blues, rock, and some that perfectly swirled the two together. With a large catalog to pull from, Ana and crew dropped new and old tracks on the crowd that dug into each track and enjoyed the performance note after note and song after song.  Keeping it simple, Popovic’s band came straight at the crowd with solid musical chops and tons of smiles.  It was obvious from the opening sounds until the lights came up, the band was having as much fun as the audience.  There were plenty of guitar solos across the evenings set that enhanced the sonic delivery of the band and the killer vocals from Ana herself that helped carry each track.  At times through the evening, especially at the end, Ana allowed each band member to flex their musical muscles with solos and interludes that added depth to the night’s performance.  The jam at the end found Popovic actually leaving the stage allowing her band to be the stars of the show and highlight each instrument.  While I have a fond appreciation for each of the bands members individual talent, the collective added to each track and helped elevate eah of the songs as verses, choruses, and bridges ebbed and flowed as the set moved from top to bottom.  The show ended without any pomp and circumstance or even an encore but make no mistake – everyone leaving was giving praise to the Ana and the show.  While this was a first time seeing Ana live for me, it won’t be the last.  The music, the vocals, the slight storytelling between some of the tracks, and the overall vibe of the show made this a great evening of live music.  Can’t wait to find myself in the same vicinity with Popovic again.
