A Dirty Dozen with BRYCE FOX – November 2024

| 1 November 2024 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Nashville alt-rock artist Bryce Fox is releasing his new EP The Butterfly! Produced by Aaron Chafin (X Ambassadors, Tofer Brown, The Brummies) and Mixed by Mark Needham (Killers, Imagine Dragons, Walk the Moon), the EP delves into the fragility of life, creating Bryce Fox’s most vulnerable and mature release to date. The songs took shape around the birth of his son, resulting in a personal  metamorphosis and reflection of the joys and difficulties of raising a family during turbulent times. With two previous albums under his belt, Fox has received millions of streams, including an RIAA Gold certified record with “Horns” off Heaven on Hold (2017). With his latest EP release, The Bomb, and the forthcoming EP, The Butterfly, both play off the concept of destruction and rebirth, proving Fox has shown up in a major way – deeply personal and completely unrestrained.” We get Bryce to discuss new music, influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

I just really hope they make it to “Sense of Humor.” To me it’s like “Butterfly” special, but for completely different reasons. It’s really a song about me battling my faith over a tough life lesson. I think you would really have to listen to the lyrics, but also know me to know exactly what it’s about.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

My grandfather got me music recording software when I was in high school. I think it was called Magix Music Maker. It came with tons of loops. I put together some awful beats and sang over them on a Toys R Us microphone. After hearing myself recorded I was hooked. It’s all I ever really cared about doing from then on.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

I really loved Blink 182. I loved the guitars, drums and the toplines. I loved how fun they were. Though my music is a bit more “serious” I still have fun making it. And truly feel I love it as much as they do haha.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Zack de la Rocha. I would love to have a song where we go back and forth. I’ve always looked up to Zack and really admired the emotion he was able to pack into his lyrics.

5. What is your favorite activity when out of the studio and/or not on tour?  What do you like to do to unwind?

I love spending time with my family. My son is my ultimate form of entertainment. Every hobby I have has taken a back seat. It’s wild watching little man learn new things every day. Seeing him change and grow up is absolutely life’s greatest gift.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

I always hate comparing myself to another band, especially to a non-musician. Because often they are like- this sounds nothing like the Black Keys hahah. So I usually just say I’m like alternative indie rock pop you’d hear on Alt Nation.

7. When your band is hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

My band is always ordering food and eating gas station snacks. I am on a strict diet now so if anything, I’ll have to do the cooking haha. My band also changes a lot, being a solo musician. My drummer Nico may not be the first to grab a guitar for a singalong, but he will whip out some primo meme’s for a laughalong.

8. When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?

I think the last time I was starstruck was when I went to Tom Hanks’ birthday party like 6 years ago. I got to meet him, it didn’t feel real. His voice was so resonant, I couldn’t believe it. I think I was more starstruck about his resonance in real life than his fame haha.

9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?

The best part about being a musician is being creative every day. I really love and appreciate the opportunity to be a professional in music. IF I wasn’t in music, my dream job would be running a golf course. Love golf.

10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?

I’ve spent 5 minutes thinking of a question for an interviewer to ask and to no avail! My least favorite question to answer is – what bands would I compare myself to? I just have always had a hard time fitting into a singular genre, and I get inspiration for so so much music. I truly feel like my voice and the way I sing is unlike any other. BUT, I’m a good sport and will always answer any question.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over,” even if it didn’t change your current situation?

I feel like I don’t know if it’s necessarily a misstep, BUT I would have forgone college and went to an arts school, hopefully finding my journey to LA sooner than I did. In hindsight I think about all the time I “wasted” on bullshit classes in college that haven’t served any benefit to my current profession and life. Other than patience… haha.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

The Long Run by the Eagles. I have really fond memories of my Grandpa sitting with me listening to this record. I would love to experience that and be able to tell him all about it. I got to experience The Eagles at the Sphere in Las Vegas last month. It was a nostalgic and cathartic experience for me.
