NOFX’s Final Tour was a special one for me; I grew up listening to NOFX. After all, the band has been around since 1983, with 15 studio albums, and they have quite a repertoire to pick from for their final tour. The band had a two-day stop planned for Winnipeg. I attended the August 14th night, where NOFX played (Number) of songs from various albums, but for other songs, you had to come back for the second night to hear them. The show opener, The Codedefants, which opens every other night for the tour, shares the opener spot with the band Get Dead, quite an interesting strategy, but it will give each night a unique experience! Which is quite refreshing. The Second act was none other than the Circle Jerks, a hardcore punk band formed in California in the late 70’s and a band that had a lot of influence in the Hardcore punk scene. Hitting the stage with their raw energy was a great act to warm the crowd up for what was to come.
NOFX wasn’t like other bands; there were no ‘Lights out’ before their set started; slowly, one by one, they made their way onto the stage, right behind the drum kit, along with crew and fans, yes fans were allowed to hang out right behind the drum kit, this was a first for me and a unique feature of the show. As the music kept going, the band had a toast behind the apps next to the drums and made their way to their respective areas while dancing before they started to play and play they did, making their way through their 30+ song set list for the night, we were all in for a treat. Playing tracks from their record Ribbed like “The Moron Brothers” to tunes like “60%,” “Seeing Double at the Triple Rock,” “The Man I Killed,” and others off of their record Wolves in Wolves’ Clothing, but the heavy hitters came off of their Punk in Drublic album, with tracks like “Lori Meyers,” “The Brews,” “Leave It Alone,” and personal favorite – and by the sound of it it wasn’t just my favorite track/song of the night – “Linoleum;” an absolute classic track. Halfway through the show, they even played a bunch of 30-50-second songs back to back, which, if you count them all, they played 40 songs that night. NOFX put on a fantastic show with plenty of crowd interaction, and they make it so seamless; I know they have been doing it for a long time, but most bands seem to self-filter themselves when talking to the audience, with NOFX it was the first time it felt like it was an interaction between people and not a Celebrity and the audience. The show went on with many favorite songs.
It was a bit of a bummer that I didn’t get to see certain songs and had to come back the next day to see other favorites performed, but I guess that’s the trade-off when you go watch a band that is on their final tour with 15 Records under their belt, they have to split it up. It was a bittersweet night, for I can imagine everyone present, getting to see one of our favorite bands live, but knowing this is the last time that will happen is quite saddening. NOFX’s Final Tour was everything I wanted it to be – well, most, had I gone back the next day, it would’ve been everything I wanted – however, even if you manage to go see them for one night, they have plenty to offer and to satisfy your ears. So, if you want to see NOFX live or see them live one last time, make sure you check out their tour and go to the closest show to you.
