According to a recent press release: “In the span of their career, Black Note Graffiti have produced several albums, appeared on internationally distributed compilations and have been placed in national TV shows and films. This can be attributed to their infectious appeal and years of consistent touring from Hollywood to New York City. With the release of FALL/RISE (Volume III) in 2020, Black Note Graffiti has finalized new material for their upcoming release in 2024, with the new track “Place You Lie.” We get singer Gabrielle to discuss new music, influences, and more.

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

This release is a good representation of how far we have come as a band. It is the most collective song we have released yet. Hidden nugget within this song, is that the name of our soon to be released full album is actually a lyric line within the bridge song – so open to anyone wanting to take a stab at which line it is.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

We all started music at a young age like most, being inspired by our favorite artist and just the overall appeal of the idea of playing an instrument is really what drove us into this hobby. Like most, it is a way of expressing yourself, letting off some steam, and just having a fun hang with friends.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

Personally, I really liked Queen as a kid and would say that played a big role in me wanting to sing rock music.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

I’d love to do a collaboration with Chino from Deftones. Chino is my favorite vocalist so it only makes sense haha.

5. What is your favorite activity when out of the studio and/or not on tour?  What do you like to do to unwind?

I love watching Anime, hanging out with friends, and playing video games.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

Our new single gets compared to Turnstile a lot, which is pretty cool because they are awesome. One comparison I’m tired of receiving is Evanescence, Paramore, or any other female fronted band for the sake of them being female fronted. All great bands, we just sound nothing like any of them stylistically lol.

7. When your band is hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

We typically hang after or before shows, grab a meal and just goof around – always a great hang.  We are all extremely busy with jobs and families and rarely have time to actually hangout outside of shows or rehearsals.

8. When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?

I was starstruck when I saw Kurt Rosenwrinkle perform at the Blue Llama for the first time. He is a well known jazz guitarist, my favorite, and he signed one of his vinyls for me.

9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?

Best part of being a musician is learning and growing never stops; There’s always new music to explore and skills to learn. Also, music has no language, so there is always a way to bond with other musicians over shared interests of experience. Being a musician is more so a hobby, I currently work in the mental health field which is my dream job. My dream job would actually be being a full time musician as I’m sure is whatever most musician dream jobs are! would be sick to wake up everyday and just think about music only.

10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?

I like questions that are specific to the music/band, ones you can tell the interviewer really did their research.  I think it’ll be cool if interviews did a segment where they randomly pick one Instagram photo from each member that’s years old and they have the musician tell the story behind the photo, very personal and cool. I am tired of being asked “what got you into music” lol. It’s a question that is so broad that there’s never really any real easy short answer for anyone.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over,” even if it didn’t change your current situation?

Honestly, not trying to sound super cliche but not really. I feel like everything happens for a reason, that goes for the good and the bad. Even if it didn’t turn out in my favor, everything I experience is for my greater good, even when it feels like it sucks a lot lol.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I’d love to sit in on the Radiohead In Rainbows recording. That album, beside the musicality, has a great production and quality, stands out among many other albums if heard in that genre. Plus everyone knows I am a huge Radiohead fan so, I’d be completely in awe lol.
