Tanita Tikaram - Closer To The People

Tanita Tikaram has grown up a long way from her debut megahit Twist In My Sobriety, released way back in 1988. She never retired from making music though, with Closer To The People being her ninth album.

Not being familiar with all that came between, I can’t say whether this is any kind of return to form or not. It’s certainly similar-yet-different to her debut album, her exotic voice (the product of her Indo-Fijian father and Malaysian mother spending her childhood in Germany and teenage years in England) is still unmistakably unique, and the smoky jazz lounge pop she aims for here isn’t a million miles removed from her debut.

There are some good songs here, too – Glass Love Train, Cool Waters, Don’t Turn Your Back On Me and Food On My Table are all heartfelt and full of emotion. All too often, though, the sultry delivery and none-more-laid-back soundtrack act more like a soporific than a call to arms.
