As I prepared to leave Florida for cooler summer climates, one final show was on the docket.  I found myself at Jannus Live for an evening of shoegaze garage hardcore pop-punk.  Kicking off the show was Chokecherry, a foursome that came straight at the crowd with their set and sound.  Scarlett, Izzie, Abri, and Zed did exactly what they set out to do.  They delivered songs and energy to a growing crowd that seemed to enjoy the music as much as the band did.  While most of their songs are currently unreleased and mostly unknown, it didn’t stop the audience from enjoying each moment they were on stage – myself included. The fans ate up their merch as well, as the band hung out for hugs, handshakes, and photos after their set.  Next up was a sonically similar band Margaritas Podridas.  The trio wasted no time once they were set up and ready to go.  The music was similar to the opening band, but vocally seemed more aggressive and it seems to add to the building energy and anticipation as the evening weaves its way toward the headlining set.

After a short presentation from a local demonstration group, Destroy Boys took to the stage to deliver their songs and their messages to an ecstatic crowd that was as ready to receive as the bands was to give.  Lead singer / guitarist Alexia Roditis put on a show from the moment she took her spot on stage and didn’t let up.  She let her voice be heard, her opinions be known, and she did both while entertaining.  Her long time musical partner Violet Mayugba added to the powerful music and messages while longtime drummer Narsai Malik and newer bassist David Orozco rounded out the sound and anchored the show.  The songs and stage banter leave no mystery as to the bands beliefs across different subjects.  If you want an energetic night out with some cool rock and roll and a message or two mixed into the good time, don’t pass on Destroy Boys when they come to your town.
