There are artists that are always a great show but seem to step up their game at certain venues… Black Stone Cherry at The Machine Shop is a killer combination that always meets the expectation of a great night of rock in a great atmosphere. The Georgia Thunderbolts kicked the night off with a great set of rockers that keep the audience revved up and ready for the headliner. As they moved through song after song, the anticipation and excitement in the packed venue – thanks to another SOLD OUT show – was undeniable as the time approached for the four guys in Black Stone Cherry to hit the stage. Without any fanfare or pomp and circumstance Chris Robertson (vocals / guitars), Ben Wells (guitars), John Fred Young (drums), and Steve Jewell Jr. (bass) all took the stage and launched into “Me And Mary Jane” cranking the energy up immediately and getting everyone singing along. With a catalog full of rockers, covers, and all-around great songs that seem to take on lives of their own live. After tracks like “Burnin'” and “Out of Pocket,” the first cover of the evening was unleashed when the guys broke into “Give Me One Reason.” The interaction and energy of the band between themselves and the audience was great to witness and experience. The tandem of “Ringin’ in My Head” and “In My Blood” helped highlight the fretboard work of Wells and Robertson while the bottom end from Young and Jewell kept the sound and the set anchored song after song. The guys pulled from every release in their catalog and featured songs that were hits and band favorites off each disc, including “Rain Wizard” from the debut release as well as set closer “Lonely Train.” -As they worked through the set, another (and my favorite cover) “Don’t Bring Me Down” delivered on every level and had the same energy and power that the recorded version has. Closing out the evening, the band played arguably the best one-two combination of the evening when they ripped into “White Trash Millionaire” and followed that up with my personal favorite “Blame it on the Boom Boom.” Don’t sleep on Black Stone Cherry when they travel through your town or even close… I am so glad I did!
