SINGLE REVIEW & FEATURE VIDEO: LEGACY ALIVE – Unbreakable
By Shane Pinnegar
Legacy Alive, hailing from Perth, way out on Australia’s west coast, have upped the ante for their latest single, the first track to see the light of day from their forthcoming third full-length album.
Keen listeners may recognise the band from their 2017 album The Morning After, when they sailed under the name Legacy Of Supremacy. The band name isn’t the only thing to have changed since then. 2019 saw them rebranding to Legacy Alive, followed by the release of the Existential EP in 2021.
2021 also saw tragedy strike the band, with bass player and friend Daniel Howell losing his battle with cancer far, far too young.
Unbreakable is Legacy Alive’s tribute to their fallen comrade, a song that band leader/guitarist/vocalist Jacob Kenny describes as “written from the perspective of someone at the end of life, looking back on a time when they felt unbreakable. The music video explores the fear of the passage of time and the fragility of life.”
Another change over the past few years has been the band’s sound. In 2017 we said The Morning After “is a polished, anthemic record boasting big fat riffs, and bigger, fatter hooks, modelled on the likes of Journey, Boston and Def Leppard’s glory days”, and whilst that anthemic, stadium rock sound is still front and centre, there’s a thoughtfulness and depth to Unbreakable which comes from experience and harsh realities, the likes of which replace the naïve exuberance of youth for us all.
Synths and subtle – powerful – orchestral elements emphasise the emotional depth of this single, bolstering its already-mighty sound, reminiscent of the best ‘80s style old school heavy rock and metal acts.
Kenny, his fellow songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Curtis Sucksmith, drummer Frank Lupino and new bassist Owen Fisher all step up to the plate to hit a home run on this tribute, and they should be very satisfied in the knowledge that it not only serves their friend’s memory well, but it’s also a striking and progressive addition to their impressive discography.
