After nearly a month off from the camera and shows to review, I couldn’t wait to light the fire again from the pit at Jannus Live on a Tuesday evening to see Silversun Pickups and openers Eliza & The Delusionals bring an energetic and sonically pleasurable show to the near capacity crowd in St. Petersburg.  About an hour of open door allowed the venue to start to fill in, especially in front of the stage against the barricade, before Australia’s Eliza & The Delusionals took their positions and proceeded to deliver a set that was high energy and filled with pop-punk rock that pleased the crowd from the pit to the back of the venue and even up above in the suites.  The band hit us with song after song from their latest release Now And Then as well as a couple tracks from 2020’s A State Of Living In An Objective Reality.  Opener “Give You Everything” from the 2022 release aligned perfectly with the next couple tracks – “Pull Apart Heart” and “Swimming Pool” – both pulled from the previous disc.  The set swirled together other newer songs like “Nothing Yet,” “Bed Song,” and a personal favorite “Save Me” before they closed out their time on stage with “Just Exist.”  We can only hope their next swing through the States provides them with a headliner slot so we can be treated to a longer set pulled from their catalog.

Supporting their almost three month old release Physical Thrills, the foursome Silversun Pickups added a date in St. Pete to the schedule and based on the size of the crowd and the reaction to the show song after song, it was well warranted.  The band wasted no time jumping into new music as they launched their set with the pairing of “Stillness (Way Beyond)” and “Sticks and Stones” which also kick off the new disc.  Looking around, you wouldn’t know these were new tracks based on the size of the crowd singing in tandem with the group.  There was an energy and mood that washed over the crowd that seemed to ebb and flow from song to song and back and forth from the stage as the band worked their way through the evenings set, including the partial addition and tour debut of “Three Seed” near the end of the set from the bands Carnavas release.  Overall, the latest disc was the source of eight tracks played including “Alone On A Hill,” Empty Nest, and one of my favorites “Scared Together” including its funk-filled riff that permeates the track from open to close.  The band – Brian Aubert, Christopher Guanlao, Joe Lester, and Nikki Monninger – seemed to enjoy themselves on stage as much as the crowd that packed the venue to see them perform and play all of the their hits and fan favorites from across their catalog.  As the band played through their set, the fans kept the energy up, especially as they performed songs in the set that was seemingly cultivated as if the fans themselves made the setlist.  The bands encore was a well-planned aural frenzy that built from track tot track starting with “Dream At Tempo 050” and culminated with arguably the bands most popular track “Lazy Eye.”  It was one of the first shows in a long time I didn’t hear people talking about the songs that weren’t played on their way out.  All in all, a great night of music that will keep their fans coming back time and time again when they tour.
