Cradle of Filth is once again traversing the United States and as the tour winds down, they made another appearance at The Machine Shop and brought another cool band Frayle with them. The place was full of black, studs, corpse paint, and a lot of Cradle of Filth t-shirts and fans. Without wasting anytime, openers Frayle took their place on stage and proceeded to deliver a very ethereal set that featured a swirl of droning rock, breathy and soaring vocals, and even a different twist on the Johnny Cash classis “Ring Of Fire.” With another slotted band dropping off the tour, Frayle was given a little extra time and room to run on stage, so to speak. Singer Gwyn Strang is captivating and vocally delivers atop the music laid before her by the band. Many consider them sludge rock, but I prefer to just label them as rock… they play stuff that you may not put on at a birthday party or celebrational get together, but there is nothing too heavy about this music that would keep it from being in my rotation at the office. After a quick stage changeover, the moment arrived for Dani Filth and the rest of Cradle of Filth to take the stage and they did so as they always do. With a bit of show, a lot of heavy metal, and even more energy. Filth runs the gamut of singing, guttural noises, and piercing vocals and screams that can only come from deep within. The stage was simple with Dani’s skeleton mic stand taking center stage while he made use of the stage and a platform that elevated his presence and allowed him to survey the room and the minions that showed for tonight’s show. The rest of CoF also made use of the stage and their time on it as guitarists Ashok and newcomer Donny Burbage delivered their contributions of the musical attack as bassist Daniel Firth and new keyboardist / singer Zoe Marie Federoff assisted with supporting sounds and a bottom end that is vital to Cradle’s sound. Drummer Martin Skaroupka kept the rhythm and cadence of the show in check from behind a kit and the accompanying plexiglass barrier. Promoting their most recent album (and last for Nuclear Blast due to a recent signing with Napalm Records) Existence Is Futile, Filth peppered the set with several new tracks including set openers “The Fate of the World on Our Shoulders” and “Existential Terror” as well as the two singles released from the disc “Crawling King Chaos” and “Necromantic Fantasies.” The songs swirled perfectly with Filth classics and fan favorites in the set such as “Lilith Immaculate” and “Nymphetamine” and demonstrated the band is firing on all cylinders to keep the Cradle legacy alive. Other than tracks from the latest releases, the band dug deep and added material from 1996’s Dusk… And Her Embrace and 1998’s Cruelty And The Beast with only two more tracks coming from the last two decades. They closed the set with one of their earliest singles “Her Ghost In The Fog” taking us out into the night having run through the band’s discography and history and left many fans clamoring for more. Knowing Dani and his crew, with time, there will be more.
