I still remember the first time I heard Myles Kennedy’s voice… jamming to a disc from The Mayfield Four, I was blown away at the power of the vocals and how well they delivered the messages and stories sonically. Fast forward a lot of years and Kennedy has only gotten better. I couldn’t wait to check out a solo show, having seen him with his day job bands Alter Bridge and Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. I arrived in time to check out the opener Tyler Bryant who dragged along his guitarist Graham Whitford for a cool guitar laden set to open the show. While a full band show would have been cool to hear, the duo made their way through their set and showcased not only their individual talent with six-strings, but also how well they played off of each other and how they were having fun doing it. Add in the fact it was Whitford’s birthday and you could sense the energy and fun coming from the stage and being returned by the crowd that packed the venue. I hope to get a chance to see and hear the whole band once they can all get together and hit the road.
Myles and his band hit the stage and from the onset, you knew this was going to be a great show. With no fanfare, he kicked off the show with “Wake Me When It’s Over” and “A Thousand Word,” both from his latest release The Ides Of March. Taking a cue from the opener, it was evident we were all awake and nowhere near ready for it to be over. Myles’ vocals were amazing from track to track and matched by his prowess on a guitar. It was great hearing tracks throughout the evening from both of his solo discs with his debut adding seven tracks to the evening and the latest reflected with eight. He also tossed in a couple from his other bands with “All Ends Well” from Alter Bridge hitting the set and a personal favorite “World On Fire” appearing near the end of the show. After a cool pairing of “Turning Stones” and “Haunted By Design” from his 2018 release Year Of The Tiger, we were treated to Kennedy strapping on an acoustic and delivering the aforementioned “All Ends Well.” Letting things settle, he jumped back into the 2018 material with a chain of three tracks that kept the energy up and the good times flowing between the crowd and the band when the trio ran through “Blind Faith,” “The Great Beyond,” and the earlier discs title track. The majority of the remainder of set was dedicated to the newer material, but it was very well received and sounded great. I love the string of tracks that closed the show, as they were some of my favorites on the actual release as he sent the crowd out of the venue with the title track “The Ides Of March” and “Worried Mind” closing out the evening.
