A Dirty Dozen with KYLE WOODLAND from JADED TRUTH – May 2021
We get guitarist / singer Kyle Woodland to discuss new music, influences, and more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
Tsukimono is our second album and revolves around many themes paranormal in origin hence the name which means possession spirit. There are some little moments of us recording that we decided to leave in to give it a more raw feel. You may not notice unless you are listening to the album up loud.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
I think I always wanted to play music in some form but listening to bands like Seether, R.E.M, Nirvana and Tom Waits really got me into writing.
3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?
Musically I’d say Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Primus influence my guitar playing. As for vocals and lyrics id have to say people like Tom Waits, Eminem, Kurt Cobain, and Layne Staley.
4. Who would be your main five musical influences?
Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Primus, Tom Waits and Pantera.
5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?
Tom Waits 100%.
6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?
Our music is a mix of Punk, Metal, and Blues but usually with dark subject matter. Probably the comments about us being too loud haha.
7. When your band is hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
I’d cook, Mike would get the drinks in and Aaron would be playing the music haha.
8. When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?
I don’t usually get star struck because we’re all human, but I was definitely happy to meet the guys from The Trailer Park Boys.
9. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?
Venting. Music is like therapy for me. I just get lost when I play live and it’s the best feeling in the world for me. If I could no longer play music? Probably a Video game streamer online.
10. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?
What other interest beside music do you have? I love playing and collecting video game especially retro games like Sega. I haven’t done enough interviews to dislike a question yet honestly.
11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over,” even if it didn’t change your current situation?
No. Live and learn.
12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
Pink Floyd’s Animals. That’s one of my favorite albums and was one of the first rock albums I ever bought for myself out of my own money.
