On an overcast and slightly humid Wednesday in Detroit, an electrical charge was in the air surrounding the newly named Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre… thanks to the evenings headliner, jazz saxophonist Kenny G. After a rousing set of originals and covers from the opener and a short set change over, the stage was set, literally, for Kenny and his band to take over and deliver a set of killer jazz, full of solos, runs, and of course the beautiful ballads he is famous for. Catching the crowd of guard, he began his show from out in the crowd near the soundboard and worked his way toward the stage, stopping midway. Climbing atop a couple road cases, he treated the audience to some great showmanship and playing as he serenaded those in the lower pavilion. After showcasing some of his talent and lung capacity (if you haven’t seen him carry a note on the sax, get to a show), he finally took his rightful spot on stage flanked by his band. As he moved through various songs from his catalog, the audience was treated to song after song that got them clapping, cheering, and even dancing in their seats. The audience was into the show and even as the show kicked off and the first few songs were played, there were people still filing into the venue. As the evening slowly ticked toward the final note, the crowd and Kenny fed off of each others energy and seemed to the good vibes and smooth jazz groove flowing, even after the last note had been played and the crowd worked their way into the evening and onto their next destination. Kenny G has his finger on his fans pulse and delivers time after time, and this Detroit night was no exception.
