With the lost kingdom of Atlantis, warring underwater races, incredible visuals, an epic love story (or two), an admirably strong anti-pollution message, pirates, trident duels, oceans ablaze, marine animals aplenty AND Jason Momao and Nicole Kidman, DC have delivered nearly their best superhero film yet. They’re still lagging behind Marvel’s best efforts, but Aquaman is almost in Wonder Woman’s league, and that was as good as anything Marvel have managed so far.
Momoa cuts an impressive profile – let’s just say that upfront – as Arthur Curry, the half human, half Atlantean super-dude. Most of the fun and action revolves around him, while the likes of Willem Dafoe and Dolph Lundgren chew the scenery in a variety of expositionary roles, Amber Heard represents as Aquaman’s own love interest, and Temuera Morrison and Nicole Kidman get lovey dovey as his parents.
Even though the film’s final battle scene is confusingly complex, it does come complete with a giant sea goat thing and more mindless action than a horde of ADHD schoolchildren could bear, and Momoa is so good in the role that we can’t wait for the next instalment.
