100% ROCK contributor and frontman of West Australian rockers Hailmary, Kevin Curran, this week released his debut solo single, Wake The Living Dead.
The song is a mid-paced burner with an acoustic undercurrent and a catchy AF melody, somewhat reminiscent of Jar Of Flies-era Alice In Chains, and one expects the lyrics referencing mindless drone-like lives of the unwoke masses would be met with approval from the Seattle band.
Curran’s vocals have always held some similarity to the late Layne Staley’s, but he has undeniably developed an individuality of his own whilst touring internationally with Hailmary. The delicacy of the song – a guitar jangles like a ringing bell under the action – allows his voice to truly shine here, not competing with a full band playing on eleven.
Sure, Kev is one of our own and we’re a little biased: but a review is a review and we’ve nothing to gain from blowing smoke up anyone. Wake the Living Dead is an excellent debut single, and definitely a progression for this proven performer, rocker and songwriter. Can’t wait to hear more.
