Shane’s Music Challenge: BLACK GRAPE – 1995 – It’s Great When You’re Straight, Yeah!
6/10
Coming out of exile following the drug-chaos implosion of The Happy Mondays, Shaun Ryder (and Bez – credited with ‘vibes/dance’, which could mean anything, really…) concocted another mad collection of crack-fuelled hippy-hoppy dance rock anthems that were as fun as they were catchy and innovative.
It was Ryder’s last really good album (so far), even if he did sound like Grandpa Simpson at times, especially on In The Name Of The Father. Reverend Black Grape and Kellys Heroes were the other standouts here, both full of insane lyrics and bad craziness. Funky tennis, anyone?
