After delivering two SOLD OUT performances in 2016 at the Lexington Village Theatre, Ted Nugent made a return trip in July 2017 to bring his rock catalog to the masses at this killer venue. We caught the second show – and the energy in the place on a Monday night rivaled that of any Friday or Saturday show. From the back of the venue on the main floor, up to the last row in the balcony and all the way to the stage, the packed audience was ready for Nugent to take them on a rock and roll vacation… even if only for a couple hours.
In a familiar cloud of dry ice and attitude, Ted Nugent took to the stage with guitar in hand and back lit to build the feel and anticipation of what was to come. With the first notes of the “Star Spangled Banner” ripping from his fingers, through his guitar, out of the speakers, and into the venue, we were off and running. Once the smoke cleared (Literally) and the lights came up, a slightly different Ted was standing ready to rock, with shorter hair and no hat, I wasn’t sure what to expect… Who am I kidding – I knew exactly what to expect. I relied on the fact that Uncle Ted would rock me, roll me, and treat my ears to some killer classic rock that takes us all back to a different time. And for the record, I was not disappointed. hearing all of the classic tracks that I could wrap my rock and roll ear around, we also were treated to a newer track to split the night up. With the familiar face, bass lines, and occasional lead vocals of Greg Smith to Ted’s left the capacity crowd got all they paid for and more. Hearing songs like “Hey Baby” and “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang” once again kept the air guitarist in me alive, while songs like “Fred Bear” kept the evening even keeled and gave everybody a reason to smile as they left after the final note was played. That final note came at the end of an extended jam version of “Great White Buffalo” that closed out a night full of licks and quips that made each of us smile at one time or another. In keeping with the theme of the evening, all I can say after this night of rocking is “Thank you Uncle Ted.”
