Fans of Kyuss and Monster Magnet will find themselves much to like on Canadians (they hail from Calgary, I believe) Woodhawk’s second album, their groove metal pulsating with a stoner psych edge.

The title track is a modern metal Interstellar Overdrive, its propulsive riff echoing through the vast emptiness of space’s uncharted nethers.

Singer/guitarist Turner Midzain possesses a great, clear, soaring rock voice, and the rhythm section are faultless, but it’s riffs that are central to Woodhawk’s sound: swirling, throbbing, big fuck-off meaty riffs. They are the celestial beings at the centre of the Woodhawk universe.

Living in The Sand is straight from the parched and baked desert; Quest For Clarity brings the fuzzed up metal; Magnetic North and Foresee The Future are a trip; whilst Star Wars fans will love A New Hope and its celebration of the Force in that galaxy far, far away.
