What happens when you take the driving force and backbone behind Drowning Pool and let them co-write and produce an EP for an up-n-coming group? You get Voices from Red Tide Rising, as co-written by drummer Mike Luce. With EP opener “Writing On The Wall” I am transported back to Drowning Pool’s debut release, thanks to the similar music and attitude in the rhythm and melody, but what can you expect when the music is co-written by the DP drummer? This track has a cool vibe that gets your attention and keeps you engaged from open to close. “You’re Nothing (But Shit)” is next and this song brings powerful lyrics, emotions, and a killer message. The band is tight on this track and nicely delivers this anthemic track, which was co-written by Ill Nino guitarist Ahrue Lustre. The chorus is catchy and drives the song. Look for a radio friendly version of the track at the end of the EP. “Suffocate” opens and unfolds slowly, but once the driving chugging riffs and heavy bottom end kick in, the song is off and running. The tempo shifts several times through the track, but without taking away from the songs impactful delivery. “The Sound Of Voices Screaming” brings one of the best grooves on the disc. While the drums keep perfect cadence, the riffs chug along and blend perfectly with punishing bass lines in the mix. The vocals add a bit of attitude and energy to the song when the chorus kicks in. “New Breed” is a fun rocker that shows how well the heavier rock sound meshes with a straight ahead rock vibe. The vocals kick in and drive the song with support of the rhythm section at the verse, while the guitars run their routes and course on the choruses and bridge. I can’t wait to see what comes next from these guys.
