I’m not saying Nikki is all things to all people, but it is difficult to imagine any fan of passionate songs not enjoying this album of fiery-spirited

With a voice that boasts the wistful alt-dreaminess of Hope Sandoval and the earthy rootsyness of Emmylou Harris, Lane’s genuine blend of singer-songwriter attitude, feminist strength, and outlaw country soul is flecked with bluesy roots here, country twang there, folky earnestness all over, and an irresistible star quality from start to finish.

Opening with the chicken-wire barroom brawl of 700,000 Rednecks before the slightly wistful, mostly perky woman-on-the-road title track, Highway Queen is a journey that takes in the life of a touring musician, the regret of failed relationships (Forever Lasts Forever is a particularly moving breakup song) and the strength that comes from knowing what you were born to do and resolutely sticking to your guns.

Lane’s third album, Highway Queen sees her defining herself as a force to be reckoned with, and the only way from here is up.
