With crime procedurals ubiquitous nowadays – think NCIS, Law & Order, Criminal Minds, et al – it’s refreshing to see a new twist on the format.

In Real Detective, each episode focuses on a true life detective’s case – usually one which cops call their ‘garden shed’ case – the ones which stay with them and continue to haunt them for years afterwards.

All the more shocking for being true life cases, the actual detectives of each case share not only the policing aspect of events, but also the human emotion of having to deal with horrific crimes for a living.

There’s some graphic scenes, bodies and the like, and the recreations of events can be confronting, so this is not a show for kids, but adults who enjoy the aforementioned crime shows will find this fascinating and gripping viewing.
