My Way is billed as a “Kick ass girl rockumentary,” and follows the journey to find rock n’ roll fame of Rebekah Starr. A university qualified professional, Starr chooses rock over a flagging marriage and a boring job, and embarks on a tumultuous trip cross country to get noticed.
Along the way Starr teams up with a couple of Eastern European girls who tag along for the various portions of the ride, we hear from the likes of Poison’s Rikki Rockett, Guns n’ Roses’ Stephen Adler and Enuff Z’Nuff’s Chip Z’Nuff, and follow the girls as they sell CDs to small town gents and plan world rock domination.
Almost inevitably, it all falls apart on the way, of course: the girls fall out, the rock world isn’t ready for such a brash and sassy rocker, especially without a band in tow.
Starr’s journey is fascinating though, but one wonders if it is her very drive to succeed as an individual which brings her house of cards dream crashing down, and the prologue showing her follow-up video in skimpy clothes just cheapens her brand completely and reeks of desperation.
With a band – and importantly, a co-writer to help polish her songs – behind her, Starr could have been someone on The Sunset Strip, but with this film having won a handful of awards on the U.S. Festival Circuit, perhaps there is still time for her to give fame and fortune a nudge in another area.
