CD REVIEW: VARIOUS – Perth Pub Bands

Perth has always had an unnaturally strong live music scene, with a lot of acts resigned to the memory banks beyond the success stories of your Stems, Scientists, Hoodoo Gurus, Jebediahs, Eskimo Joes, Dave Warners and the like.

The good folks at Procopy Morley have compiled this trip down memory lane which is sure to be a big hit amongst those of us who partied and rocked our formative years through the glory days of Perth pub rock in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

My schoolmates and I couldn’t begin to count the number of times we saw Ice Tiger, The Jets, The Flying Fonzarellis or even V-Capri: the scene was so strong that we were often at gigs two-three-even four times a week. Slightly before our time, the likes of The Motors and Invaders are also featured here.

There’s also pub favourites The Frames, Loaded Dice, Ice, Perfect Strangers, Talon, Tora Tora and more, covering a wide spectrum of musical styles, and all giving it their best shot.

Back in those days a local band was lucky if they could afford to release a couple of 7” singles, which they generally played in amongst the covers during their three-sets-a-night shows (often four times a week!) Much of this material, therefore, is not only amongst the only recorded documents of these acts, but also long out of print.

Crucially, the 15 tracks here barely scratch the surface – there were so many bands that featured prominently through the years that several more volumes would be needed to even slightly scratch the surface (and indeed Vol 2 is in the planning stages already).

Hell, if commercial considerations weren’t such an issue, it would be great if full catalogues of all these bands and many more could be restored and reissued for posterity’s sake.
