Without words, Kate Prendergast tells the story of a boy who is running late for his train, and on his way out the door he drops his favourite hat.
His dog picks it up and follows him – out the door, to the station, down the escalator and onto the train, and then through crowds of people to find his human, all the while protecting the red and white hat, and working to catch up with the boy, made easy to spot by his red boots.
The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story they tell speaks of the bond between a dog and its human, as any dog-lover will be well familiar with.
My own thoughts on this book vary depending on my own mood on the day that I read it, and I believe it comes down to the fact that there are quite a few things that could not or would not realistically happen. Though the events don’t hold up under logical scrutiny, it’s still a very sweet story.
