Heart and Souls DVD

When four people – waitress Julia (Kyra Sedgewick), wannabe singer Harrison (Charles Grodin), single mother Penny (Alfre Woodard) and small-time thief Milo (Tom Sizemore) – die in a bus crash, their souls enter newborn baby Thomas Reilly (Robert Downey Jr). They remain ever-present companions of Thomas, guiding him through childhood – though of course only he can see them, and by the time he is ten they decide to retreat out of his sight, as his parents and teachers start thinking him insane for talking to them.

Thomas is a 30-year old lawyer with commitment problems, much to his girlfriend (Elisabeth Shue)’s chagrin, when the four souls make themselves known to him again: an emissary from the afterlife is recalling them after an oversight left them on this mortal coil for 30 years too long.

During that time, though, they were supposed to have each resolved their one outstanding issue they were left on earth to attend to.

The rest of the film is a series of comic and heartwarming escapades as they each find redemption or resolution, including Thomas. It’s a lovely little film that is family friendly and like a cup of chicken soup for the soul.
