Hailmary are in raging form on their latest EP Evolve Dissolve – they have indeed evolved, sounding as assured and world class as they ever have.

Featuring five tracks that expertly balance darkness and light – and more frequently abide in the shadows between the two – Evolve Dissolve finds singer Kevin Curran in amazing voice, whilst his and new boy Paul Cush’s guitars weave together seamlessly over a propulsive rhythm section (drummer Vas Shevtsov & bassist Mick Quee).

There are still shades of their early Alice In Chains influences, notably on Equilibrium, but Hailmary are their own men now, with Longest Line especially a modern rock song that any self-respecting rock radio programmer should have already added. With a huge hook, and electric and acoustic guitars dancing together, this is one of the songs of the year.

After an album and four Eps, not to mention multiple successful Australian and one UK tour (supporting Ugly Kid Joe, no less) and an ever-expanding fan-base, Hailmary have done as much in Australia and beyond as any independent rock band in recent years. Evolve Dissolve cements this, and turns the cold, hard mirror of truth back onto our record labels and radio stations: literally, what more can a rock band do before they are noticed, nurtured and given a chance with real industry support?
