Veteran Toronto blues guitarist and singer Jake Chisholm steps up a notch on his first album since 2013’s Diamond In A Coalmine, delivering this confident and dynamic ten track collection.
With the focus jointly on Chisholm’s gritty and authentic blues playing and his vocals – the perfect marriage of blues and soul – the songs here get a chance to shine without over-production or the interference of too much musicianship. Think tasteful and appropriate rather than minimalist.
The Fabulous Thunderbirds-groove of I’m On Fire sits proudly next to the soul-blues of Weigh You Down, which is followed by the deeper blues of Is There Another Man, a sad lament that throbs with menace just under the surface, like a perfectly still lake with just the hint of a ripple above a large, dark shadow.
Just Because You Want To tips the cap to Jimi Hendrix’s latter work, the expertly crafted song the star, with Chisholm’s guitar running a close second. Swamp Stomp does exactly what it says on the tin, whilst I’m Still Alone is a searing branding iron of a song, burning deeply into the listener.
The album closes out with two mighty tracks: I Want You The Way You Are recalls the bombast and telepathic groove of Cream, whilst You Never Will takes us further back through the ‘60s to the early rock blues of The Yardbirds.
