Armageddon USA - Up In Flames

Frantic, speedy and thrashy, Armageddon USA make unapologetically heavy metal that will have fans headbanging at – literally – breakneck speed.

Formerly known simply as Armageddon, the band released their debut in 1988, The Money Mask, but were ripped off, lost the copyrights to their songs, and were left with a huge debt to pay, which not only ended the band but prompted the band members to drop out of music altogether for a while.

Thankfully a re-release of The Money Mask on Retroactive Records in 2007 saw a reunion of the band and – this time keeping things completely independent and doing it their way – here we are with the long-awaited second album. Original Armageddon members Joe Hasselvander (Raven, Pentagram, Savoy Brown), Robert Bussey, Robby Lee and Mike Vance have enlisted Raven founder, bassist and singer John Gallagher to play bass on several tracks, and the result – produced by Hasselvander – is vibrant, muscular and entertainingly old school.

Tackling such topical subject matter as media misinformation (Spinner), the cult of television (Hypnotized), the cost of war (Revolution), and bad governmental policy making (Up In Flames), this album is also reminiscent of the wave of ‘80s metal bands in that it makes you think: there is depth to the songs both musically and lyrically.

Up In Flames isn’t so much a trip back to the glory days of ‘80s metal, as a band who are sticking to their guns, playing some great heavy metal tunes, and having something important to say. With a European tour slated for 2016, hopefully it won’t be too long before they can get some new tunes together and get another album recorded.
