I was never a big fan of Survivor. Sure we all now the words to the songs, but I can’t say that I listen to them on a regular basis – hell I bet it has been years since I really listened to any of it. It is evident immediately this disc is associated or related to that Top 40 hit churner. Jim Peterik is as vital to this sound as he was to that sound of old. At times, even the vocalist sounds like Jimi Jamison.
Don’t get me wrong, this disc has some great playing on it from Peterik and the rest of the band. The vocals are strong on this release as well. It blends well with the instrumentation. The songs are well constructed. It has all of the components of a great disc, but something about it misses the mark for me.
Again, several songs are well constructed and played, such as “Shine On” and “Vital Signs.” The Survivor connection rears its head during “Coin Of The Realm.” The underlying riff and chugging of the guitar sounds like it was lifted from “Eye Of The Tiger” and placed on this track.
Again, on paper, this disc is a winner; there is just something that doesn’t do it for me. If you dug Survivor and that sound, pick this up – you won’t be disappointed.
