Stevie Wonder came to Joe Louis Arena to perform his Songs in the Key of Life tour with an epic three and half hour ensemble on November 21, 2015. The 25-time Grammy award winner delighted the sold-out audience who braved the first Michigan winter snowstorm with his band of over 40 musicians and vocalists. He began the show addressing social issues, talking about the recent terror attacks in Paris and the recent police violence. “More than ever,” he told the crowd,” “Love’s In Need of Love” today, leading into the first track from his classic 1976 Songs in the Key of Life album. Stevie preached to the crowd that more than ever we need to reinvest in ourselves, and our children by encouraging a resurgence in arts and music in our schools.
Wonder had more Life to perform on Saturday in front of his hometown crowd. As the show progressed deep into Sunday morning Wonder took note of fellow Detroiter Aretha Franklin’s attendance, leading the crowd in a rendition of her “Respect.” He then assumed his personal of DJ Tick Tick Boom, playing a mash-up of Motown favorites, Eminem’s “My Name Is” and other rap hits before finishing the show with a furious medley of “Do I Do,” “All I Do,” “My Cherie Amour,” “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” “Living For The City” and “Higher Ground,” and a full-length jam of “Superstition.”
As the audience basked in the magic of “Wonder,” his words “life” and “love” continued to resonate. The Songs in the Key of Life performance was truly a spectacle that needed be heard!
