They call him The King Of Sling, the architect of Dirtcore, and the leader of the Grill Nation – he is Brownbag Johnson and he has delivered another epic EP that drags the Texas boogie of ZZ Top by the balls out back of a turbo charged fire-breathing hovercraft through a swamp, swigging moonshine whiskey all the way.
Johnson’s souped-up Billy Gibbons riffology is applied literally here, too, with a cover of The Top’s Beer Drinkers & Hellraisers, and it could only sound sweeter with a couple of breakfast shots of Mr Daniels’ finest.
The title track and Hellride both make you wanna drive very fast down a lonely highway with the backseat full of your toxins of choice, while King Of Hessia (L.I.V.I.N.) and Rebel Song (the latter including a quick chorus of The Beastie Boys’ You Gotta Fight For Your Right) are veritable party anthems – if your parties are dark and dangerous affairs with sleaze at the top of the ‘things to do’ list.
Which brings us to the sixth and final track on this here release: Born To Be Wild. This is a song which has been covered with atrocious results by some of the brightest and best in the game (yes, I’m looking at you, The Cult, Angry Anderson, Zodiac Mindwarp – to name but a few!) Suffice to say we cringed as the track counter clocked over to #6 – but those cringes were slapped from our faces instantly, as Johnson doesn’t try to play up the theatricality of the song, or out-do the classic original, merely delivers it like the down and out rocker it is – with a hefty pinch of swampy sleaze, of course. The result is terrific and a fine addition to what is fast becoming a prolific and essential canon of work.
