A few years ago Sunset Riot, who hailed out of Melbourne, looked like being Australia’s great white hope to crack America with their slick-but-ballsy melodic rock assault. Sadly, the Riot imploded, perhaps a casualty of too much time on the road and not enough time on the same page.
Singer Dellacoma Rio has been far from idle since, assembling this eponymous four-piece of like-minded rock dogs and tastefully dishevelled souls.
South Of Everything is a fiery debut for the new band – and a band it certainly is, despite flying the singer’s flag. Most of the songs are co-written by the entire foursome, with a few Rio has brought in via other contributors.
Ballsier and less slick than his former band, Dellacoma’s riffs are large, with a darkness to the tunes complemented by the broodingly overcast cover image. Melodic and catchy – whilst not being in any way syrupy or cloying, the likes of Bloodsucker, Under My Skin, Lessons Learned, Change and FJH (Get Me Out) are custom-hotrod tunes made with a big stage and large crowd in mind.
Dellacoma have a vibe about them: they’re a new outfit and full of potential. They’ve delivered an excellent debut in South Of Everything, and they have the potential to do better & better with albums to come. Get in now at the ground level, because these guys are only going up.
