Slaves’ jerky, snotty two-man punk assault is street-wise and swells with the confidence of the young and inexperienced – too inexperienced to realise (or admit) they are treading in some well-worn footprints rather than breaking any new ground.
Taking their cues from The Clash, Ian Dury, Babyshambles, The Killers, et al, they’ve concocted a feisty and combustible mix of sounds, from the sneer of Do Something (“you’re not stuck in traffic – you ARE traffic”), the lamentative acoustic guitar and casio title track, and the louche charisma of She Wants Me Now.
There’s also the bile-filled Feed The Mantaray (whose meaning completely eludes me), and Sugar Coated Bitter Truth, which resembles something the early PiL might have done.
Are you Satisfied ticks a lot of the boxes disaffected youth will be looking for, lik any good punk record should, and there’s almost enough substance behind that to make Slaves a band worth keeping an eye out for.
Some other stuff you might dig
