These Raven Skies - cover

Whether they like it or not, the debut album from These Raven Skies is going to get compared to The Tea Party. Both bands hail from Canada, and this album was produced by Jeff Martin, Tea Party frontman, guitarist and producer, who also plays on three of these tracks.

That’s a shame though, as These Raven Skies have a vibe all their own and have put together an excellent record which shares an adventurous musical heart and a soulful groove with the more experienced band, but remains resolutely different.

Of the three tracks featuring Martin, only The Garden is particularly reminiscent of The Tea Party. Elsewhere Magick Waters, the bold riff and dour juxtaposition of Are We Having Fun? (another song featuring Martin), the barroom shuffle of Come Sit Next To Me, Open Road and Truth Be Told all impress with exuberant playing and an abundance of heart and soul, and Martin’s production is, as always, exemplary.

These Raven Skies are well worth seeking out.
