Son Of A Gun movie poster

Shot in Western Australia and starring Ewan MacGregor, Son Of A Gun is a sometimes bleak tale of a young life that teeters far too easily over the brink into major crime.

When JR (Brenton Thwaites) is sent to prison he has little alternative but to accept hard man Brendan Lynch (Ewan McGregor)’s help in fending off the unwanted attentions of some very nasty chaps with violent manrape on their minds.

Released after six months, MacGregor expects payback from JR, and before he knows it he is racking up a serious list of criminal acts involving weapons, hijacking, drugs and even breaks McGregor & cronies out of prison in exciting style before embarking on a major armed robbery of a mine site.

Featuring loads of local landmarks around Fremantle, Kalgoorlie and Rottnest Island, Son Of A Gun is a tough and sometimes brutal look at the no-chance-for-rehabilitation justice system and those to whom it has become a second home.

McGregor & Thwaite’s characters initially bond in jail over the tactics of a chess game, and that race to outthink each other several moves ahead becomes the subject of the last act of the movie, as JR and his girlfriend Tasha (Swedish actress Alicia Vikander) do all they can to avoid becoming outmanouvered and dead in the process.

Very tightly scripted and exciting throughout, local writer/director Julius Avery throws every trick in the book at the screen, and it works, with every quiet scene having a point, and every shootout and car chase being action packed. The outcome is that we are truly worried about young JR – Thwaites proves his worth in spades, showing us why he is now an up and comer in Hollywood – and whether he’ll make good, and while Son Of A Gun has us cheering for the crims, at least it’s not the really bad ones.
