CD REVIEW: SHIRAN- Warm Winter Day

“…Djent metal style that also culls from Jazz and Blues.”  What does that even mean?  The term Djent still escapes me, but if you know what it is, supposedly this EP has it.  All I know is this is a great release from a new force on the scene.  “Remain” kicks this disc off and it does so with power riffs blended with melodic vocals from the talented Shiran.  The vocals from the verse to the chorus soar and give the song a softer edge against the heavy track.  Title track “Warm Winter Day” has a more straight forward sound to it that rings of great metal without taking the sound too heavy, but still features the lofty vocals from the first track.  “The Child” brings a rough sound and heavy vibe to a track that has lyrics that walk a dark ledge beneath the powerful vocals.  The bass and drums add depth while the guitars keep the song flowing.  “Glint Of Light” prominently features Shiran’s vocals against solid playing from the guitars and rhythm section.  The different textures in the vocals demonstrate the raw talent of this new comer.  “Burden’s Off” closes the disc with strength and some of the best playing on the disc.  The drums and bass drive the song with a heavy bottom end that perfectly contrasts the lead vocals and provides the perfect bookend to this collection.  The is an unreleased track available on the bands site and there are more ready to go when they record the next disc, according to Shiran.  I for one cannot wait to see what this vocalist and her band unleashes on the world.
