Supported by 4 piece Melbourne band My Echo, who played a 45 minute set of their catchy post punk tunes, they were the perfect warm up for Jimmy Eat World. Humble and gracious for this opportunity, their sound quality was excellent.
This was indeed a show of two halves, and an epic 1hr 40min set. The venue’s stage level was full, however the crowd was nowhere near the numbers for venue capacity with all the multi layers unopened and empty.
As you would expect from these guys, the musicianship was polished and tight. Jim Adkins really is the show: although he doesn’t interact with his audience that much throughout the set, there is still a very mellow and comfortable connection to the artists. Their crowd isn’t as diverse as I would have imagined, with an equal ratio of male to females in the early to mid twenties. They were a well-behaved crowd for the more than adequate security for the event. A fan group of endless smiles and consistent lyrical callbacks.
The set list had this band covered, with something for everyone, both recent and existing fans. The first part of the night showcased their classic work and the second half the more current and uplifting material. The band really built the momentum for the finale with classics Sweetness and The Middle.
The light show was intense but it did not distract from the performance as the guys are not about creating a spectacular, but the laser spotlights moving frantically all throughout the whole show were a bit exhausting. The lights give off an incredible amount of heat too – luckily we had no fits of heat collapses to report.
The most impressive part of the musical performance had to be the vocal harmonies – five band members, with four of them tuned and pitched perfectly really grabbed my attention.
This was the first of their Australian shows and everyone present was impressed by a show presented for their fans, the atmosphere, the set list, the extended arrangements. It’s for the folk that love them already. Enjoy.
