Shane’s Rock Challenge: FAITHFUL BREATH – 1984 – Gold n’ Glory

As Vikingtastic a band of horned-helmet wearing early metalheads as ever existed, Faithful Breath hailed not from the Nordic northern lands, but from Germany, but they weren’t always studded-leather-wristband-metal, having released an early 70s prog/space rock album called Fading Beauty and a couple of more AC/DC-ish boogie albums around 1980/81.

On one level Faithful Breath are the spiritual forebears of modern bands like Alestorm, reknowned for pairing spandex leggings with Viking helments, metal riffs with pillage-lust lyrics, and YouTube has plenty of examples in all their glory.

It’s all pretty bonkers and at times slightly lumpen, in that 80s Eurometal way, but when they strike their hammers right it’s a golden glory (yeah, sorry) to behold, as on the ludicrously titled but utterly brilliant Don’t Feel Hate, King Of The Rock, Gold n’ Glory and Don’t Drive Me Mad.
